So thanks to real life, my blog had been a wee bit neglected these past two weeks as has my reading schedule though I did manage to finish With All My Soul by Rachel Vincent and should be posting my review later this week.

Still have managed to pick up a few books, both from the library and from netgalley.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic Easter and/or break :-)

The Sweetest Dark(The Sweetest Dark #1) by Shana Abe

For fans of Lauren Kate and Libba Bray, The Sweetest Dark is filled with thrilling romance, exciting adventure, and ancient magic. Shana Abé brilliantly captures the drama of post-Victorian England, while unfolding a passionate love story that defies time.

“With every fiber of my being, I yearned to be normal. To glide through my days at Iverson without incident. But I’d have to face the fact that my life was about to unfold in a very, very different way than I’d ever envisioned. Normal would become forever out of reach.”

Lora Jones has always known that she’s different. On the outside, she appears to be an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl. Yet Lora’s been keeping a heartful of secrets: She hears songs that no one else can hear, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with a mysterious voice inside her that insists she’s far more than what she seems.

England, 1915. Raised in an orphanage in a rough corner of London, Lora quickly learns to hide her unique abilities and avoid attention. Then, much to her surprise, she is selected as the new charity student at Iverson, an elite boarding school on England’s southern coast. Iverson’s eerie, gothic castle is like nothing Lora has ever seen. And the two boys she meets there will open her eyes and forever change her destiny.

Jesse is the school’s groundskeeper—a beautiful boy who recognizes Lora for who and what she truly is. Armand is a darkly handsome and arrogant aristocrat who harbors a few closely guarded secrets of his own. Both hold the answers to her past. One is the key to her future. And both will aim to win her heart. As danger descends upon Iverson, Lora must harness the powers she’s only just begun to understand, or else lose everything she dearly loves.

Filled with lush atmosphere, thrilling romance, and ancient magic, The Sweetest Dark brilliantly captures a rich historical era while unfolding an enchanting love story that defies time.

Fall of Night (Morganville Vampires #14) by Rachel Caine

Thanks to its unique combination of human and vampire residents, Morganville, Texas, is a small college town with big-time problems. When student Claire Danvers gets the chance to experience life on the outside, she takes it. But Morganville isn’t the only town with vampire trouble...

Claire never thought she’d leave Morganville, but when she gets accepted into the graduate program at MIT, she can’t pass up the opportunity. Saying good-bye to her friends is bittersweet, especially since things are still raw and unsettled between Claire and her boyfriend, Shane.

Her new life at MIT is scary and exciting, but Morganville is never really far from Claire’s mind. Enrolled in a special advanced study program with Professor Irene Anderson, a former Morganville native, Claire is able to work on her machine, which is designed to cancel the mental abilities of vampires.

Ink (Paper Gods #1) by Amanda Sun

I looked down at the paper, still touching the tip of my shoe. I reached for it, flipping the page over to look.

Scrawls of ink outlined a drawing of a girl lying on a bench.

A sick feeling started to twist in my stomach, like motion sickness.

And then the girl in the drawing turned her head, and her inky eyes glared straight into mine.

On the heels of a family tragedy, the last thing Katie Greene wants to do is move halfway across the world. Stuck with her aunt in Shizuoka, Japan, Katie feels lost. Alone. She doesn’t know the language, she can barely hold a pair of chopsticks, and she can’t seem to get the hang of taking her shoes off whenever she enters a building.

Then there’s gorgeous but aloof Tomohiro, star of the school’s kendo team. How did he really get the scar on his arm? Katie isn’t prepared for the answer. But when she sees the things he draws start moving, there’s no denying the truth: Tomo has a connection to the ancient gods of Japan, and being near Katie is causing his abilities to spiral out of control. If the wrong people notice, they'll both be targets.

Katie never wanted to move to Japan—now she may not make it out of the country alive.

Publication Date: 25 June 2013

Pre-Order:Book Depository

Comment: I saw this book recently briefly mentioned at Harlequin Summit last month and I immediately wanted it. Not only is the cover absolutely gorgeous but the story sounds absolutely awesome. I love books set in Japan, Japanese Gods and moving drawings. Can't wait for this to come out in June.

The Rose Throne by Mette Ivie Harrison

Richly-imagined fantasy romance from the author of Princess and the Hound, a tale of two princesses--one with magic, one with none--who dare seek love in a world where real choice can never be theirs. For fans of Megan Whalen Turner, Catherine Fisher, and Cassandra Clare.

Ailsbet loves nothing more than music; tall and red-haired, she's impatient with the artifice and ceremony of her father's court. Marissa adores the world of her island home and feels she has much to offer when she finally inherits the throne from her wise, good-tempered father. The trouble is that neither princess has the power--or the magic--to rule alone, and if the kingdoms can be united, which princess will end up ruling the joint land? For both, the only goal would seem to be a strategic marriage to a man who can bring his own brand of power to the throne. But will either girl be able to marry for love? And can either of these two princesses, rivals though they have never met, afford to let the other live?

Book Blast & Giveaway: Starseed by Liz Grudner

Starseed

Author: Liz Gruder

ISBN: 978-1937178291

Publisher: WiDo Publishing

Published: February 2013

SUMMARY

Kaila Guidry has always known she is different. When she meets Jordyn Stryker at school, she finds out
just how different.

Jordyn was born and raised far from Earth, a starseed, one of six new students sent to Louisiana's Bush
High to learn human ways. But Jordyn didn't count on meeting someone like Kaila.

When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn awakens her to a new
reality—and to love. But to prove herself, Kaila must look the other way as the real purposes of the
starseeds unfold.

As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves inexorably forward, Kaila and Jordan,
caught in an impossible love, must determine where their true loyalties lie.

Praise

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live
the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of
questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of
everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an
entertaining read. I highly recommend."

--Patricia B. Smith. Author “What the Animals Tell Me” and “Fifty Shades of Santa” (clean romance
fiction)

"Liz Gruder’s characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine,
Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader’s encouragement from the first page. Fans of Amanda Hocking will find
themselves similarly transported into Gruder’s exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher
dimensions, and, of course, high school." --Jadie Jones, young-adult fantasy author

When Camille was six years old, she was discovered alone in the snow by Enrico Vultusino, godfather of the Seven—the powerful Families that rule magic-ridden New Haven. Papa Vultusino adopted the mute, scarred child, naming her after his dead wife and raising her in luxury on Haven Hill alongside his own son, Nico.

Now Cami is turning sixteen. She’s no longer mute, though she keeps her faded scars hidden under her school uniform, and though she opens up only to her two best friends, Ruby and Ellie, and to Nico, who has become more than a brother to her. But even though Cami is a pampered Vultusino heiress, she knows that she is not really Family. Unlike them, she is a mortal with a past that lies buried in trauma. And it’s not until she meets the mysterious Tor, who reveals scars of his own, that Cami begins to uncover the secrets of her birth…to find out where she comes from and why her past is threatening her now.

New York Times bestselling author Lili St. Crow thrilled legions of fans with her dark paranormal series Strange Angels. Now she has crafted an evocative update of Snow White, set in a vividly imagined world and populated by unforgettable new characters.

Wicked Kiss (Nightwatchers #2)
 by Michelle Rowen

MY KISS CAN KILL.

I used to be ordinary Samantha Day, but that's changed. Now, after one dark kiss from a dangerous boy, I can steal someone's soul...or their life. If I give in to the constant hunger inside me, I hurt anyone I kiss. If I don't...I hurt myself.

Bishop is the one whose kiss I crave most, but if I kiss him, I'll kill him. Then there's another boy, one I can't hurt. One whose kiss seems to miraculously quell my hunger. They're both part of a team of angels and demons that's joined forces in my city to fight a mysterious rising darkness, an evil that threatens everyone I know and love. I just wonder if I'll be able to help Bishop-or if I'm just another part of the darkness he's sworn to destroy....

NIGHTWATCHERS

When angels and demons must work together, something beyond evil is rising...

Review:

I really enjoyed Wicked Kiss, probably more than I expected.  I had enjoyed book 1, Dark Kiss,  enough that I wanted to read this, the second instalment, however I must say I definitely enjoyed this instalment even more.

Wicked Kiss is the final instalment in the two book Nightwatchers series and this in itself definitely worked in its favour.  as a result, though a lot happened in Wicked Kiss, the pace of the story was constant and did not seem rushed at all.  In fact, it kept me pretty much in the story till the end.

I wasn't sure about the whole Angel/Demon thing at first as I have read a lot of 'angel stories' lately but the story actually grew on me and seemed to get better as it continued and the fact that I didn't see all the plot twists coming made it that much better.

I did struggle a little with the characters,  There were some I liked, Demon Kraven and nemesis Jordan in particular but I found in general I had a difficult time picturing them.  While the characters grew on me also, I didn't always believe the characters in parts of the novel which disappointed me just a little.

Over all though, this was definitely a read I would recommend.  The story was a journey that I immensely enjoyed and was a little sad to come to the end of.

I give this story 3 1/2 stars

Dark Kiss (Nightwatchers #1) by Michelle Rowen

I don't do dangerous.

Smart, ĂĽber-careful, ordinary Samantha-that's me. But I just couldn't pass up a surprise kiss from my number-one unattainable crush. A kiss that did something to me...something strange. Now I feel hungry all the time, but not for food. It's like part of me is missing-and I don't know if I can get it back.

Then there's Bishop. At first I thought he was just a street kid, but the secrets he's keeping are as intense as his unearthly blue eyes. If he's what I think he is, he may be the only one who can help me. But something terrifying is closing in, and the one chance Bishop and I have to stop it means losing everything I ever wanted and embracing the darkness inside me....

Also I was so glad to Find Mystic City as I have been salivating over this book since it came out last year.  LastlyI  picked up my Pretty Little Liar series reservations to fill in the gaps of the ones I have borrowed so far. So now I can literally read this series from start to finish/most recent book :-)

Not afraid to raise the stakes, Phoenix seemingly holds all the power, always one step ahead. And when he puts the final pieces of the prophecy together, it doesn't take him long to realise exactly who he needs in order to open the gates of Hell.

With the help of surprising new allies, ancient prophecies are deciphered, a destination set and, after a shattering confrontation with her father, Violet leaves for the islands of Greece without knowing if she will have a home to return to...

Review:

This is easily the best instalment so far.  Picking up shortly after where book 2, Entice, left off, I was right in this story from start to finish.

The Grigori have the scripture Phoenix wants to raise Lilith,  the Academy is intrigued about Violet being the only angel of the Sole, which may not be a good thing, Violet and Lincoln know they are soul mates but after seeing Rudyard and Nyla, know they can't be together and Violet's dad has finally taken an interest in Violet's life at the worst possible moment.

These are just some of the threads that Jessica Shirvington juggles effortlessly in a novel that packs action from start to finish, a great storyline and all the romance & angst we have come to expect from Violet and Lincoln and Violet's connection with Phoenix.

If you enjoyed Embrace and Entice, then I suggest you don't miss this next instalment.  If you have not yet read this series and you are a fan or action, romance and kick ass angels, then put this series next on your reading list.

A very definite 5 stars for Emblaze!

Gameboard of the Gods by Richelle Mead

In a futuristic world nearly destroyed by religious extremists, Justin March lives in exile after failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims. But Justin is given a second chance when Mae Koskinen comes to bring him back to the Republic of United North America (RUNA). Raised in an aristocratic caste, Mae is now a member of the military’s most elite and terrifying tier, a soldier with enhanced reflexes and skills.

When Justin and Mae are assigned to work together to solve a string of ritualistic murders, they soon realize that their discoveries have exposed them to terrible danger. As their investigation races forward, unknown enemies and powers greater than they can imagine are gathering in the shadows, ready to reclaim the world in which humans are merely game pieces on their board.

Gameboard of the Gods, the first installment of Richelle Mead’s Age of X series, will have all the elements that have made her YA Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series such megasuccesses: sexy, irresistible characters; romantic and mythological intrigue; and relentless action and suspense.
