"Jones. Josie Jones," Jo quickly interjected, grateful for Eddie's fib.  She could not let it be known that Miss Josephine Montford of Gramercy Square frequented the morgue in her spare time.

These Shallow Graves  by Jennifer Donnelly

Set in gilded age New York, These Shallow Graves follows the story of Josephine Montfort, an American aristocrat. Jo lives a life of old-money ease. Not much is expected of her other than to look good and marry well. But when her father dies due to an accidental gunshot, the gilding on Jo’s world starts to tarnish. With the help of a handsome and brash reporter, and a young medical student who moonlights in the city morgue, Jo uncovers the truth behind her father’s death and learns that if you’re going to bury the past, you’d better bury it deep.
Josephine Montfort is from one of New York's oldest, most respected, and wealthiest families. Like most well-off girls of the Gilded Age, her future looks set - after a finishing school education, she will be favourably married off to a handsome gentleman, after which she'll want for nothing. But Jo has other dreams and desires that make her long for a very different kind of future. She wants a more meaningful and exciting life: she wants to be an investigative journalist like her heroine Nellie Bly. But when Jo's father is found dead in his study after an alleged accident, her life becomes far more exciting than even Jo would wish. Unable to accept that her father could have been so careless, she begins to investigate his death with the help of a young reporter, Eddie Gallagher. It quickly becomes clear he was murdered, and in their race against time to discover the culprit and his motive, Jo and Eddie find themselves not only battling dark characters on the violent and gritty streets of New York, but also their growing feelings for each other.

Review: Ten Thousand Skies Above You by Claudia Gray

My Review:

Oh my goodness!  This book was so worth the wait! I do believe that this is even better that book 1.

In A Thousand pieces of you, we were introduced to Marguerite Caine, her parents and inventors of the Firebird technology and their grad students Paul and Theo looking for a man she believed to be her father's killer and uncovering inter dimensional conspiracy.

In Ten Thousand skies Above you, we see the affects that that conspiracy has had on them all with Theo sick from his exposure to NightThief and Paul splintered and scattered through a number of different dimensions.  Once again it is up to Marguerite, the perfect traveller, to travel to the different dimensions to save her world's version of Paul and Theo

This story flows seamlessly.  Whether it is from one dimension to another or one idea or scene to another, each world we visit and each version of the characters we see brings us further into the story and as Marguerite gets closer and closer to her goal, she ( and the reader uncover more and more questions.

I loved reading and seeing the different worlds that Marguerite visits.  Each of them were completely distinct and the world building so complete that I couldn't help but be completely immersed in the story from beginning to end.  Even better we got to revisit some of the worlds from book which, revisit some previous characters and see the impact Marguerite's original visit had had.

All in all this book ahad everything I could want in it;  Romance, action, interdimensional travel.  I was completely entranced from beginning to end and could not get enough.

I need book 3 now!

I give this book a definite 5 stars! :-)

Blog Tour Stop and Giveaway : Super Freak by Vanessa Barger

Welcome today's stop on the Super Freak by Vanessa Barger Blog Tour presented by Tantrum Books and hosted by Chapter by Chapter.  Today's stop is a review as well as a chance to enter the great giveaway that is being run throughout this tour.

Review:

There are some books that you know you are going to enjoy after reading the first couple of pages.  Super Freak is one of those books.

For a start the whole premise of a normal girl being the odd one out in a world of paranormals is a nice take on the usual paranormal story and I was interested to see how this would pan out.

I instantly liked the main character Caroline.  She was smart, down to earth and instantly likeable.

I knew I was going to like this story within the first few pages and my faith in the book and the story was completely justified.  I flew quickly through this book eating up every word anjoy the mystery that unfolded.

After Caroline finds out that her new house is supposedly cursed, she and her new friends set out to find out more and try to solve the mystery behind the curse.  Vanessa Barger writes the mystery well, pacing the finding of the clues out nicely whilst slowly building up the tension and it was fun trying to figure out the mystery.

I greatly enjoyed this book and think it is a perfect example of a well written middle grade book that can also appeal to other readers outside of the middle grade age group. I. myself am well out of the middle grade age bracket but not only did I enjoy it but I liked that it still had that great middle grade feel and it is a book that I would definitely give to my daughter to read once she gets a little older.

I immensely enjoyed this book and give it 4 stars.

Review: The Lake House by Kate Morton

Title: The Lake House
Author: Kate Morton
Published: 21 October 2015
Publisher: Allen and Unwin

My Review:
This book was one of my first forays into Kate Morton's writing, but after hearing so many good things and the fact the description of this book seemed right up my alley, I couldn't resist requesting it and I am so glad that I did as this book was beyond amazing.

At nearly 600 pages, you could be forgiven for being a little intimidated by this book but within a few pages, I was completely lost in the tale, captivated by the story unfolding around me.

The story at its core centers around the disappearance of baby Theo on Midsummer 1933. A mystery that has baffled police right up to 2003 when DC Sadie Sparrow from London, on leave after mistake that could cost her career comes across the old family House, Loeanneth and becomes interested in the case even though its been cold for over 50 years.

This book extends across three main time periods, namely parts of 1911 though world war 1, early 1930s and 2003 and seen mainly through the eyes of three main protagonists, Alice Edevane and her mother Eleanor Edevane, both of whom were there that fateful Midsummer night and Sadie Sparrow, unaccountably hooked on the mystery and determined to see it through.  Three women, all with secrets of their own colouring their thoughts and feelings.

The use of multiple points of view could have been terribly confusing but Ms Morton instead uses them to expertly weave a tale covered in layers that are slowly peeled away to reveal more of the story as Ms Morton brings her characters and the reader ever closer to the truth.

Ms Morton's writing style is rich in imagery and flows beautifully as she creates a picture of Cornwall, the house  Loeanneth  and the various surrounds.  Those words on the 600 pages are never wasted, everyone of them crucial to the story,  placed exactly where they should be and tightly woven into the plot. It the perfect combination of writing, story and character to keep me totally invested throughout.

The advance praise that this book has received is most definitely well deserved as Kate Morton proves herself to be a master story teller with a beautifully crafted tale that is full of mystery, secrets, drama and romance.

I absolutely adored this story and give it 5 stars!

About The Book:

The Lake House by Kate Morton

A missing child.

June 1933, and the Edevane family's country house, Loeanneth, is polished and gleaming, ready for the much-anticipated Midsummer Eve party. Alice Edevane, sixteen years old and a budding writer, is especially excited. Not only has she worked out the perfect twist for her novel, she's also fallen helplessly in love with someone she shouldn't have. But by the time midnight strikes and fireworks light up the night skies, the Edevane family will have suffered a loss so great that they leave Loeanneth forever.

An abandoned house.

Seventy years later, after a particularly troubling case, Sadie Sparrow is sent on an enforced break from her job with the Metropolitan Police. She retreats to her beloved grandfather's cottage in Cornwall but soon finds herself at a loose end. Until one day, Sadie stumbles upon an abandoned house surrounded by overgrown gardens and dense woods, and learns the story of a baby boy who disappeared without a trace.

An unsolved mystery.

Meanwhile, in the attic writing room of her elegant Hampstead home, the formidable Alice Edevane, now an old lady, leads a life as neatly plotted as the bestselling detective novels she writes. Until a young police detective starts asking questions about her family's past, seeking to resurrect the complex tangle of secrets Alice has spent her life trying to escape.

I open my mouth to tell Conley to stop playing games-

Review: Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes #2) by Sara Raasch

Title: Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes #1)
Author: Sara Raasch

My Review:

After the events at the end of Ice Like Fire, I couldn't wait to revisit the world of Primoria and see what happened next to Meira and her Winterians and I was not disappointed.

It's a few months after the events of Abril and the return the Jannuari but things are not as rosy as Meira would like. Noam and Cordell have strengthened their hold over Winter and Mather isn't speaking to Meira, dealing with his own issues, and Meira finds that despite having freed her people from Angra and Spring, they are still not truly free nor can she find any conclusive proof that Angra is truly gone.

In this book, Ms Raasch starts to flesh out the world of Primoria more and we start to learn more about the other countries and the people.  I think this world building definitely helps with the story as we start to get a feel of the challenges that Meira is facing in saving her people and bringing about peace.

Ms Raasch does not give Meira an easy time of it and much of the story we see her struggling to find her identity and reconcile the wild soldier girl with the queen she feels she needs to be. We also see Mather struggling with all the issues that have come out of the revelation that he is not in fact the King of Winter and reconciling himself and his relationships, in particular with Alyson and William in light of finding out they were his parents all along.

I really like the way Ms Raasch shows us the inner struggles of these characters and explores what is below the surface, the idea that not everything is automatically okay just because they are now free from Spring

This story moved along well and I was in the story from beginning to end though like Snow like Ashes, this is a bit of a slow burn at the beginning with second bringing about the bulk of the action and twists. That being said however their is tension all the way through be it between the characters or as  Ms Raasch builds on the intrigue as the story progresses and we meet the rulers of the other countries and visit the cities they rule.

I really enjoyed this next instalment feeling that it really advances the story and builds on the world  and I cannot wait to see what will happen in book 3.

I give this story 4 stars

About The Book:

Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes #2)  by Sara Raasch

It’s been three months since the Winterians were freed and Spring’s king, Angra, disappeared—thanks largely to the help of Cordell.

Meira just wants her people to be safe. When Cordellan debt forces the Winterians to dig their mines for payment, they unearth something powerful and possibly dangerous: Primoria’s lost chasm of magic. Theron sees this find as an opportunity—with this much magic, the world can finally stand against threats like Angra. But Meira fears the danger the chasm poses—the last time the world had access to so much magic, it spawned the Decay. So when the king of Cordell orders the two on a mission across the kingdoms of Primoria to discover the chasm’s secrets, Meira plans to use the trip to garner support to keep the chasm shut and Winter safe—even if it means clashing with Theron. But can she do so without endangering the people she loves?

Mather just wants to be free. The horrors inflicted on the Winterians hang fresh and raw in Januari—leaving Winter vulnerable to Cordell’s growing oppression. When Meira leaves to search for allies, he decides to take Winter’s security into his own hands. Can he rebuild his broken kingdom and protect them from new threats?

As the web of power and deception weaves tighter, Theron fights for magic, Mather fights for freedom—and Meira starts to wonder if she should be fighting not just for Winter, but for the world.
