About All Laced Up:

Everyone loves hockey superstar Pierce Miller. Everyone except Lia Bailey.

When the two are forced to teach a skating class to save the rink, Lia’s not sure she’ll survive the pressure of Nationals and Pierce’s ego. Not only can’t he remember her name, he signed her bottle of water like she was one of his groupies. Ugh.

But if there’s one thing Lia knows better than figure skating, it’s hockey. Hoping to take his ego down a notch—or seven—she logs into his team website under an anonymous name to give him pointers on his less-than-stellar playing.

Turns out, Pierce isn’t arrogant at all. And they have a lot in common. Too bad he’s falling for the anonymous girl online. No matter how much fun they’re starting to have in real life, she’s afraid he’s going to choose fake-Lia over the real one…

Disclaimer: This book contains a swoony hockey player (and his equally swoony friends!), one-too-many social media accounts, kisses that’ll melt ice, and a secret identity that might not be so secret after all…

Her smile at Una's and Juliet's sweet gesture to leave this room for her turned hesitant as she considered whether or not their host's flower choice had been intentional or coincidental. Lilies are commonly used in arrangements, so it wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination to think that this was just a happy accident.

Witch's Pyre (Worldwalker #3) by Josephine Angelini

Lily Proctor has come a long way from the weak, sickly girl she used to be. She has gained power as a witch and a leader, found her way home, chosen to face battle again, and (after losing her first love and being betrayed by her new love) she has learned more about loss and grief than she ever wanted to know.

Thrust once again into a society different from anything they have ever seen, Lily and her coven are determined to find answers―to find a new path to victory, a way to defeat the monstrous Woven without resorting to nuclear weapons or becoming a tyrannical mass murderer like her alternate self, Lillian. But sometimes winning requires sacrifices . . . and when the only clear path to victory lies at Lillian's side, what price will Lily be willing to pay?

Internationally bestselling author Josephine Angelini takes us on another emotionally wrenching thrill ride in the stunning conclusion to her Worldwalker Trilogy.

Blog Tour and Giveaway: Olivia Decoded (Olivia Twisted #2) by Vivi Barnes

Olivia Decoded Banner

Welcome today's stop on the Olivia Decoded by Vivi Barnes Blog Tour  hosted by YA Reads.   Today's stop is a review as well as a chance to enter the great giveaway that is being run throughout this tour.

The Review:

I really enjoyed this second book in the Olivia Twisted world. As the original book had been a re-imagined Oliver Twist, I was interested to see where book 2 would go.

I thought this was a clever continuation. The story flowed well and I finished the entire book story in a matter of hours. Olivia in general felt like quite a genuine character and how her life had panned out since finding her grandfather made sense. This story starts 3 months after the events of the original story so circumstances had changed for most of the characters and it was good to see where they all were and how they were coping. Some better than others.

The story is told from both Olivia and Jack/Z's perspective which gave us two different story threads which I felt Ms Barnes intertwined and eventually merged well with twists and turns that had me turning the pages quickly to see how it would all turn out. I also liked the vein of romance throughout the story with the relationship between Olivia and Jack, strained ( or non existent) as it was given the events of book one and the direction it took during this story. I felt like it moved in a way that felt authentic and and where it was at the end of the story made sense in the story.

I kind of picked the ending alittle but it didn't matter too much as I thought the whole story wrapped up quite nicely and I had a lot fo fun reading this.

I give this story 3 3/4 stars :-)

Read below for an excerpt from the book:
“Wow, who gave you that?”

“My grandfather. He left it on my car seat this morning.”

“Oh, boo. I thought maybe you had a secret admirer or something.” I try not to smile at her obvious disappointment. Emerson’s been on me to date for months now. She knows I had someone back in Richmond who was special, but only that we broke it off before I moved here. She doesn’t know anything else about Jack. No one does, because what would I say? The last guy I dated is a criminal, and the last time I saw him was right after we got kidnapped by his horrible boss and almost died trying to escape. That’d go over really well.

“I don’t know, what do you think?” Emerson breaks into my thoughts as we walk down the hallway to our lockers.

“About what?”

She sighs. “Where Kade’s taking me tonight. Girl, you are not with it today, are you? Are you doing anything tonight?”

“My grandfather’s taking me to dinner.”

“Sweet. Not so romantic, but sweet.”

I smile. “Yes, he’s sweet. But a little over the top on gifts sometimes.” Even after eight months of living the wealthy life, I’d be happier if he gave me a gift card to a bookstore instead of extravagant jewelry I rarely wear.

My phone starts buzzing, and I pull it from my pocket. Grandfather’s text reads: What gift?

I frown, typing, The bracelet you left in my car. I snap a quick picture of the bracelet on my wrist and send it to him. Maybe his text was a hint to send a picture, though I doubt it. He’s usually pretty direct about things.

“What’s up?” Emerson asks.

“Looks like Grandfather forgot he left me the bracelet.” But even as I say it, it doesn’t sound right. He’s one of the sharpest people I’ve ever known, and he runs a financial institution.

“Maybe he gave it to one of his staff to put in your car.” Her voice has the usual bitter tone whenever she’s thinking of her parents. They’re hardly ever around, and when they are, they don’t pay much attention to her.

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” I don’t believe that, though. Even though it’s possible Mrs. Bedwin did put it there, I doubt it. Grandfather is the type to handle things himself when it comes to me. But Emerson’s parents travel so much for their business that they often let their staff handle things like birthdays and other events they think aren’t important. So as grateful as I am that Grandfather’s always there for me, I don’t like to rub that in Emerson’s face.

“Maybe you really do have a secret admirer,” she says hopefully.

I roll my eyes.“I doubt that.”

“Oh, really?” She stops in her tracks, her eyes fixed straight ahead. I follow her gaze, a sharp sense of dread creeping down my spine. A white rose is dangling from the vent in my locker.

A rose I know wasn’t placed there by my grandfather.

Blog Tour Stop: Review : Smoke and Mirrors (Blackhollow Academy #1) by Jess Haines

Welcome today's stop on the Smoke and Mirrors Blog Tour  hosted by Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours.   Today's stop is a review.  Read on to see what I thought as well as reading an exclusive excerpt from the book!

Review:

I love stories about magic and magic schools and this one was just that little bit different from the ones i normally read which made me enjoy it all the more. Kimberley is a half human/half sorcerer going to a school for mages where sorcerers are mostly reviled. She has spent the majority of her time at the school hiding what she is so that she can make it through and get her license to practise magic and secure the the job of her dreams with one of the more prestigious covens. However Kimberley needs to bind a familiar to graduate but being a sorcerer has no affinity with elemental magic nor ability to summon, Enter Cormac, the handsome mysterious stranger with his own secrets and who might be her only chance of finding a dragon to become her familiar in time for graduation.

I enjoyed the story that Ms Haines tells. The writing flowed and immediately enticed me into the story. There was enough twists and turns to keep me guessing and in the story from beginning to end and I loved the chemistry between Cormac and Kimberley.

I particularly liked the character of Kimberley in this book. She was a strong female character with a strong moral compass though somewhat naive in the way of things magical and I liked that despite the fact her life had never been easy, she never expected anyone else to solve her problems for her and was happy to face them head on. I liked that this book was not about kimberley needing saving but rather about her finding out more about who she is is and what she is capable of, in a situation where there is danger wherever she might turn.

I also found the world Ms Haines built in this story incredibly intriguing. A world that knew of the existence of others and mages seem to be at the top of the pecking order and almost considering many of the other paranormal beings and entities to be beneath them and even subservient to them. I would have liked to see more of the covens and the school and the students themselves as I felt like we only got a small taste of these with only a couple of the other students really playing an individual role in this story and given that this is listed as being the first book in the BlackHollow academy series they we may yet see some more of this world and these characters.

This story is a great combination of adventure, romance , action and self discovery. I found it a solid enjoyable read and gave the story 3 3/4 stars

Book Title: Smoke and Mirrors (Blackhollow Academy #1)

Author: Jess Haines
Release Date: May 1, 2016
Genre: Young Adult/New Adult Fantasy

A girl who uses her illusions to fool the world into thinking she's just like all the other magi.
A dragon who sees through her lies.
Together they just might survive a world that wants to control or destroy them both.
Kimberly may wield ultimate cosmic power, but even a mage has to pay the rent. No one will hire her for her magic talents until she's got the credentials, so she’s stuck in a crappy rent controlled apartment with her mother, yearning for treats she can't afford at her part time job in a café, counting down the days until she graduates the secret Blackhollow Academy school for magi. Only then will she have the certificate she needs to land her dream job in a coven.
The problem? She needs a familiar to graduate.
As an illusionist, she doesn't have the ability to summon or create a familiar of her own. Her only option is to convince a supernatural creature to let her bind it instead. Since having a powerful Other at her beck and call would guarantee her a place in a coven after she graduates—and legendary treasure hoards are an added bonus—she thinks binding a dragon as her familiar will solve all her problems...
Because sometimes a girl needs a dragon, not a knight

Viper made a soft hissing sound of irritation between his teeth, pulling back from her. “Cormac has no vision. I know what I want and I’m prepared to offer anything to get it. You have but to ask.”

Well. There was one thing. Her cheeks flared crimson and she squirmed a bit before stuttering out another question, swallowing back her embarrassment.

“You keep a hoard like a dragon, right? I don’t suppose you would consider loaning me a little? I swear I’d pay it back.”

His head tipped to one side, and he looked her up and down anew. She suspected he was just noticing her frayed cuffs and cheap shoes. He’d been so intent on getting whatever it was he wanted out of her that he hadn’t paid attention to the package it came in until now. When she caught the very slight curl of his lip, there and gone in a flash, embarrassed heat filled her cheeks.

Feeling both dirty and humiliated, she ducked her head. “Never mind. I shouldn’t have asked. I’m sorry, I don’t think I can do this.”
“Come now, I’m sure it’s not that hard. All it takes is a yes.”

“No,” she said, this time with a bit more vehemence. Cormac was right. There was something off about Viper, and never mind what a perfect ass she’d just made of herself. Worst of all, that flash of disgust showed he obviously had no respect for her. At least Cormac never made her feel tolerated. “Thank you for the offer, but I’ll find some other way of getting what I need.”

He slowly rose to stand, heaving a sigh as he settled back on his heels.

“That’s unfortunate. This would have been much easier if you had agreed.”

Kimberly would have asked what he meant by that, but the look in his eyes froze her in place.

His eyes burned a molten gold as he spread his arms, which were expanding and shifting at an alarming rate. Faster than she might have thought possible, he was growing, his clothing melting and skin disappearing under a layer of metallic scales. Nearby, people were noticing, shouting and screaming in fear as they stampeded in every direction to escape the shapechanging Other in their midst.

When he ceased growing, from the tip of his nose to the end of his tail, he was over thirty feet long, with a wingspan half again that size.
Kimberly sat immobile, unable to so much as squeak in terror as the beast before her lurched back to arch its neck and spread its wings, barbed tail lashing as it growled at her. One thick, talon-tipped paw lashed out, flattening her on the grass and squeezing the air out of her lungs. It gave an awkward, one-legged hop forward to catch its balance before clenching its claws to dig deep furrows in the grass and close around her waist and legs, pinning her.

Then those wide, ribbed wings began to flap, the sun playing off the tones of brass and copper and gold. The ground fell away, people scattering before the airborne monster.

And Kimberly could do nothing but pray, staring up at this great beast that had her in its claws.

She’d gotten what she’d asked for. Now she would have to pay the price.

Review: Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass #5) by Sarah J Maas

Title: Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass #5)
Author: Sarah J Maas
Published: 6 September 2016

My Review:

This was an amazing amazing read! Such a glorious continuation of this series. I was so enthralled by this latest instalment that my nails are bitten to the quick after reading the last 100 pages!

In my opinion, book 4 was a really big book in the series, with Ailin finally embracing her destiny and finally besting her nemesis, the King of Adarlan. Though we knew the big bad is down in Morath and intent on unleashing his horrific experiments on the whole of Erilea, this book was a essentially a whole new direction for the series as a whole and i wondered where this direction would lead us and whether it would live up to the first four books.

I honestly don't why would doubt Sarah J Maas' brilliance as the moment I started reading, I was home, Back with the familiar characters I have grown to love and living, breathing, following their story once more as if this was always meant to be. In this instalment, we see the story through the eyes of mostly Aelin, Manon and Elide with other smaller chapters devoted to Aedion, Dorian, Rowan and other characters. Each thread, each point of view, each different character pulled me more and more into the story and kept me invested in where the story was going. Though the previous King of Adarlan may be dead, Ms Maas still keeps the stakes high for all the characters and nothing is ever as it seems.

There were a few twists along the way that I picked to a certain degree but Ms Maas is extremely skilful at putting the puzzle pieces together in such a way, that the bigger picture formed is not at all what you expected but perfectly right. The pace and flow of this instalment is superb and ensures that once you are completely absorbed into the story from page 1 and by the time you hit the last 100 or so pages, there is no way you will be putting that book down till you reach the end.

I utterly adored this book and loving that this series is getting better and better with each book and have absolutely no hesitation in giving this book 5 huge stars!

Welcome today's stop on the Keeping Her Secret by Sarah Nicolas Blog Tour  hosted by Chapter by Chapter   Today's stop is a review as well as a chance to enter the great giveaway that is being run throughout this tour.

Review:

This was an incredibly sweet and enjoyable read. I picked it up late afternoon and was invested in the story from the first few pages. A few hours later, I had reached the end and had a smile on my face from the warm fuzzy feels of this book.

I immediately found both the main characters both likeable and easily relatable. I liked Riya's determination and sense of self and I understood Courtney's feelings of overwhelming pressure to follow a future she was not even sure she wanted and being terrified of what she was pretty sure she really wanted.

The story is told from two different view points - Riya and Courtney's, and this helped make the story work as we got to see two different sides of the same experience - finding one's self and exploring one's sexuality. On the one hand you had Riya content in her sexuality and supported in it by her family and friends where as Courtney is terrified of losing everything she has if she admits to anyone especially herself that she might be different. And I liked that we got to see both characters develop in themselves and grow throughout the story.

The story itself is quite sweet and simple however the way it is written is what caused me as a reader to invest in the story and the characters and it was the feels that it generated that were off the charts giving me no choice but to continue on to the end

While this is an LGBTQIA romance, it is first and foremost sweet, fun and romantic tale and definitely worth the read. I for one really enjoyed it and give it 3 1/2 stars
