My current read is Shadow bound by Rachel Vincent and my two lines are from page 175:

...chuckled, but his eyes weren't laughing. "So you can handle this on your own, then?" he said, and that question had only one acceptable answer.

If you live in the dark long enough, you begin to forget the light...

Kori Daniels is a shadow-walker, able to travel instantly from one shadow to another. After weeks of confinement for betraying her boss, she's ready to break free of the Tower syndicate for good. But Jake Tower has one final job for Kori, one chance to secure freedom for herself and her sister, Kenley, even if it means taking it from someone else....

The job? Recruit Ian Holt-or kill him.

Ian's ability to manipulate the dark has drawn interest from every syndicate in the world, most notably an invitation from Jake Tower. Though he has no interest in organized crime, Ian accepts the invite, because he's on a mission of his own. Ian has come to kill Tower's top Binder: Kori's little sister.

Amid the tangle of lies, an unexpected thread of truth connecting Ian and Kori comes to light. But with opposing goals, they'll have to choose between love and liberty....

Review:

I have loved this series so was incredibly excited to get the next instalment but at the same completely devastated that the series was ending.

This story doesn't start immediately where the last one left off but 9 months later as Kate after spending her entire pregnancy in captivity is almost ready to have her child.

As the mother of an 11 month old baby myself, I was a little apprehensive in the beginning few chapters wondering where the storyline with the baby would lead and questioning a little the mindset of Kate as she is weighing up her choices with regards to Henry, the baby, and indeed the fate of the world. Thankfully Ms Carter lay my fears to rest in that regard finding a good balance to make Kate's relationship with her baby son, and actions as a result both believable but not too cliched.

The writing of this novel drew me right back into Kate and Henry's world where Titan Cronus is just about to break free and the rest of the Gods of Olympus are fighting to stop this from happening.  There are equal parts action and inaction in this story and were both were just as compelling as the other and I found myself flying through the pages towards the conclusion.

I believe this was a satisfying conclusion to this series, while still being sad that it is all over.  What I liked most was the characters, more specifically the fact that that while the characters themselves grew, they also stayed true to their essence.  This was especially true for Kate.  She grew as a person but her overall essence stayed true.  This helped to round out the story to the satisfying conclusion I mentioned above.

Last of all, this story and the writing evoked many emotions including both tears of joy and sadness and then left me with that numb," it's all over, what do I do now?" feeling that a good story or series can do and like I have said goodbye to friends who I will miss.

I give this story 3 3/4 stars :)

Amazing week book wise.  I requested a whole heap of books on Edelweiss, not expecting to be approved for most of them and then had 6 approved in one go.  So now its time to put my reading/reviewing hat on and get to it:

For Review (Via Edelweiss):

Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike

Moving to a new high school sucks. Especially a rich-kid private school. With uniforms. But nothing is worse than finding out the first girl you meet is dead. And a klepto.

No one can see or hear Kimberlee except Jeff, so--in hopes of bringing an end to the snarkiest haunting in history--he agrees to help her complete her "unfinished business." But when the enmity between Kimberlee and Jeff's new crush, Sera, manages to continue posthumously, Jeff wonders if he's made the right choice.

Clash meets sass in this uproarious modern-day retelling of Baroness Orczy's The Scarlet Pimpernel

Towering by Alex Flinn

At first, I merely saw his face, his hands on the window ledge. Then, his whole body as he swung himself through the window. Only I could not see what he swung on.
Until, one day, I told my dream self to look down. And it was then that I saw. He had climbed on a rope. I knew without asking that the rope had been one of my own tying.

Rachel is trapped in a tower, held hostage by a woman she’s always called Mama. Her golden hair is growing rapidly, and to pass the time, she watches the snow fall and sings songs from her childhood, hoping someone, anyone, will hear her.

Wyatt needs time to reflect or, better yet, forget about what happened to his best friend, Tyler. That’s why he’s been shipped off to the Adirondacks in the dead of winter to live with the oldest lady in town. Either that, or no one he knows ever wants to see him again.

Dani disappeared seventeen years ago without a trace, but she left behind a journal that’s never been read, not even by her overbearing mother…until now.

A #1 New York Times bestselling author, Alex Flinn knows her fairy tales, and Towering is her most mind-bending interpretation yet. Dark and mysterious, this reimagining of Rapunzel will have readers on the edge of their seats wondering where Alex will take them next!

Reboot by Amy Tintera

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.

The perfect soldier is done taking orders.

Busy week this week in books, not so much with the blog.  Real life crept up a bit so wasn't able to get eveything done that I wanted with it.  However got some awesome books this week including one from my favourite author...

For Review (Via Eidelweiss):

The Scrivener's Tale by Fiona McIntosh

An action-packed standalone adventure moving from present-day Paris to medieval Morgravia, the world of Fiona McIntosh's bestselling QUICKENING series.

In the bookshops and cafes of present-day Paris, ex-psychologist Gabe Figaret is trying to put his shattered life back together. When another doctor, Reynard, asks him to help with a delusional female patient, Gabe is reluctant… until he meets her. At first Gabe thinks the woman, Angelina, is merely terrified of Reynard, but he quickly discovers she is not quite what she seems.

As his relationship with Angelina deepens, Gabe’s life in Paris becomes increasingly unstable. He senses a presence watching and following every move he makes, and yet he finds Angelina increasingly irresistible.

When Angelina tells Gabe he must kill her and flee to a place she calls Morgravia, he is horrified. But then Angelina shows him that the cathedral he has dreamt about since childhood is real and exists in Morgravia.

Soon, Gabe’s world will be turned upside down, and he will learn shocking truths about who he is . . . and who he can - or cannot - trust.

A fantastic, action-packed adventure starting in Paris and returning to Morgravia - this wonderful epic adventure grabs the reader from the first paragraph and doesn't let go.

Blood of Dragon (The Rain Wild Chronicles #4) by Robin Hobb

The dragons' survival hangs in the balance in the thrilling final volume in the acclaimed River Wilds chronicles fantasy series

The dragons and their dedicated band of keepers have at ast found the lost city of Kelsingra. The magical creatures have learned to use their wings and are growing into their regal inheritance. Their humans, too, are changing. As the mystical bonds with their dragons deepen, Thymara, Tats, Rapskal, and even Cedric, the unlikeliest of keepers, have begun transforming into beautiful Elderlings raked with exquisite features that complement and reflect the dragons they serve.

But while the humans have scoured the empty streets and enormous buildings of Kelsongra, they cannot find the mythical silver wells the dragons need to stay health and survive. With enemies encroaching, the keepers must risk "memory walking"- immersing themselves in the dangerously addictive memories of long-deceased Elderlings - to uncover clues necessary to their survival.

And time is of the essence, for the legendary Tintaglia, long feared dead, has returned, wounded in a battle with humans hunting dragon blood and scales. She is weakening and only the hidden silver can revive her. If Tintaglia dies, so, too, will the ancient memories she carries - a devastating loss that will ensure the dragons' extinction.

Giveaway/Exchanges:

Got a book I have been dying to read for ages this week in my online Mother's group Valentines exchange and my daughter received a pretty dress ( as per below) :-)

Once Every Never (Never #1) by Lesley Livingston

Clarinet Reid is a pretty typical teenager.

On the surface.

She's smart, but a bit of a slacker; outgoing, but just a little insecure; not exactly a mischief-maker, but trouble tends to find her wherever she goes.

Also? She unwittingly carries a centuries-old Druid Blood Curse running through her veins.

Now, with a single thoughtless act, what started off as the Summer Vacation in Dullsville suddenly spirals into a deadly race to find a stolen artifact, avert an explosive catastrophe, save a Celtic warrior princess, right a dreadful wrong that happened centuries before Clare was even born, and if there's still time, literally, maybe even get a date.

This is the kind of adventure that happens to a girl once every, never.

My current read is Splintered by A. G. Howard and my three lines are from page 192:

"Don't," I murmur, in a daze.

He draws back, eyes heavy and dark. "You want me to stop?"

This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Review:

This book was really uncomfortable to read in a surprisingly good way.  At first it is just uncomfortable, jarring and creepy.  Jarring because it tends to leap between the past and present which got a little confusing at times, uncomfortable because this is the feeling between the main characters and her parents and friends, after what happened with her boyfriend and this seeps through in the writing   and creepy because you don't know how much of what Mallory is experiencing is real and how much is not.  Having read Megan Miranda's previous book Fracture , I somewhat expected this uncomfortable, creepy vibe and knew that generally it led to good things so continued to read.

As the story moved along, the backwards and forwards nature of the story began to make more sense and the pace of the story picked up and kept me glued to my kindle until the story was over.

I liked the suspense of the novel and and the way the author slowly revealed what had actually happened that night, which of course added to the suspense. Add in the creepiness of the school and I was literally on the edge of my seat reading at times.

The story itself is tight and clever.  There are twists and turns but these are not over the top so the ending while not completely unexpected, made sense and satisfied the story.

I love Ms Miranda's writing as it really seems to convey the moods and feelings of her main character and what they are experiencing.  This is part of what makes this book especially when you realise all may not be as it seems...

This book is just as good if not better than Fracture.

I give this book 4 stars

Review:

What I love about Richelle Mead's books is that you never know where they are going to go except that it won't necessarily be where you expected. The Indigo Spell is no different.

This book took me a little longer to read than the previous two bloodlines books but I think this was partly because of just how much was packed into it. Not that this was a bad thing. Ms Mead manages to expertly weave an astonishing number of story lines and elements together and it is literally not until the last page that you realise just how brilliantly this has been done, as the ending is absolutely perfect. It leaves the reader delighted at where the story has gone and eager for the next instalment, to see where Ms Mead will take the story journey next.

I love Adrian and Sydney and the chemistry they have together and I loved seeing how their journey progressed also. While there are a lot of things going on in this book, what was most visible was the growing Sydney does as a person, both learning about herself and learning to trust her feelings and reactions.  This book out of the three Bloodlines books shows most growth so far for Sydney and that made it all the better.

I did get a wee bit lost in the middle and a little bit overwhelmed with all the different things going on but it all came together in the last few chapters making it all entirely worth it.

As usual, Ms Mead has provided an awesome read!

I give this book 4 1/2 stars

Everbound (Everneath  #2) by Brodi Ashton

Nikki Beckett could only watch as her boyfriend, Jack, sacrificed himself to save her, taking her place in the Tunnels of the Everneath for eternity — a debt that should’ve been hers. She’s living a borrowed life, and she doesn’t know what to do with the guilt. And every night Jack appears in her dreams, lost and confused and wasting away.

Desperate for answers, Nikki turns to Cole, the immortal bad boy who wants to make her his queen — and the one person least likely to help. But his heart has been touched by everything about Nikki, and he agrees to assist her in the only way he can: by taking her to the Everneath himself.

Nikki and Cole descend into the Everneath, only to discover that their journey will be more difficult than they’d anticipated — and more deadly. But Nikki vows to stop at nothing to save Jack — even if it means making an incredible sacrifice of her own.

In this enthralling sequel to Everneath, Brodi Ashton tests the bonds of destiny and explores the lengths we’ll go to for the ones we love.

Boundless (Unearthly #3) by Cynthia Hand

The past few years have held more surprises than part-angel Clara Gardner could ever have anticipated. Yet from the dizzying highs of first love, to the agonizing low of losing someone close to her, the one thing she can no longer deny is that she was never meant to live a normal life.

Since discovering the special role she plays among the other angel-bloods, Clara has been determined to protect Tucker Avery from the evil that follows her . . . even if it means breaking both their hearts. Leaving town seems like the best option, so she’s headed back to California - and so is Christian Prescott, the irresistible boy from the vision that started her on this journey in the first place.

As Clara makes her way in a world that is frighteningly new, she discovers that the fallen angel who attacked her is watching her every move. And he’s not the only one. . . . With the battle against the Black Wings looming, Clara knows she must finally fulfill her destiny. But it won’t come without sacrifices and betrayal.

In the riveting finale of the Unearthly series, Clara must decide her fate once and for all.
