Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

Title: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
Author: Michelle Hodkin
Source: Purchased Galaxy Bookshop
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Date Released: 1st February 2012
Purchase:  Amazon | Book Depository |
Sapphired Dragon Rating: ****

Synopsis ( via Goodreads):
Mara Dyer doesn't think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can't remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.

There is.

She doesn't believe that after everything she's been through, she can fall in love.

She's wrong.

Review:
Since i first heard about this book midway through last year I have been dying to read it. So when I saw it at my local bookshop while at book club last week, I didn't hesitate to snap it up and start reading.

Mostly it was exactly what I expected from it. It was creepy and strange, suspenseful and exciting and the premise had you guessing all the way through. I think i imagined a dozen different scenarios before i got to the conclusion.

While i somewhat expected and somewhat hoped for the way things panned out, i was a almost a little disappointed with the it... until the last page. The cliff hanger... Oh my Goodness! It redeemed my faith and actually made me double check to make sure i hadn't missed some pages I was that shocked and yet somehow relieved.

And now like so many other readers I must wait until the next book to continue the story.

This is deemed a paranormal romance but the paranormal kind of sneaks up on you unawares. However, to be honest I was too caught up with what was happening in the story to really notice the presence or lack of it until I had finished it and had time to think about it.

Over all I was completely gripped by the story to the very end. The only thing that takes away from giving it 5 stars is that in the middle it did get a little confusing as seeing the story unfold through Mara's eyes meant that you could not necessarily trust that what Mara was seeing was actually happening hence the imagining a dozen different scenarios until it all unfolds.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense with an edge of paranormal and a large helping of romance.

Definitely a 4 star read :)
