excerpt

Skye was a coward. She knew that, but she couldn’t bring herself to stay and watch Sid and Aspen commit suicide. There was no way the council would allow Aspen to become queen.
Not to mention that then Skye would have to know the exact moment when she died, because anyone who pledged loyalty to Sid would die the second he did. No, running away was better. She should have enough time to get to her parents before death came. She’d able to say goodbye.
This was her fault. Pearl had told her to keep Aspen safe. Instead she’d gone and made everything worse. Maybe if she’d kept Aspen at home, Sid would’ve been fine.
If she’d never given Sid that damn loyalty seal, she wouldn’t be this close to death. She wasn’t sure what she was thinking at that time. Part of her thought he’d make it. Another part didn’t care whether she lived or died. It wasn’t like she’d have much of a life anymore.
When Sid became King she found Everett and begged him to remove the seal that marked how much she loved him. He did and now she longer had a swirl of gold on her ankle. But Everett warned her there would be a price to pay. She gladly paid it at the time, but but she hadn’t expected to feel so empty.
For a half second she thought about heading to Everett’s instead of her parents. Maybe he could remove the loyalty seal before she died. She shook her head. How cowardly of her. The price would not be worth it. That was for sure.
She was only fooling herself though. She would make the same decision if given the choice. Aspen was the only way they could possibly survive. When Skye dropped Aspen off , there were three possible outcomes. One, she and Sid would die and all those with loyalty seals would as well. Two, Helios, the final dragon that Sid needed to secure all the loyalty seals got to him before the council had a chance to killed him. Or three. Aspen could be become queen. She’d have to convince the council that she should be queen and pass the queen’s tests She hoped Aspen could do it.
She felt her wings tiring. This could be the beginning of her death. She hadn’t known anyone who had died because of the loyalty seal and didn’t know how it worked. She spotted a lake below her and decided to stop and get a drink. She had to make it home.
Skye landed a little rougher than normal. This had to be the end. She staggered over to the water and took a deep drink. The water sparkled under the full moon. Skye stretched her wings out and swiveled her neck around to scratch her nose. She froze. Her wing was no longer silver.
This must be part of her death. Or at least that was what she tried to convince herself of. Adrenaline coursed through her veins and she no longer felt tired. Dragons didn’t change color before they died. In fact dragons never changed color. Except when they became king. Then they turned black.
Skye spun neck around the other direction. It was more than her wings that had changed. Her whole body was now a deep coal black.
This was impossible. There was no way she could become king. Sid was king. Unless he died. Then someone else would take his place, but that someone had to be a full royal dragon and male. Of which she was neither. There had to be some huge mistake. This had to be a dream. She stuck her head in the cold water and came out again. Still black. This wasn’t possible.
Unless.
That stupid prophecy.
The one that said three kings would rise. The one that said they could come from other races. But she was still female. Something was definitely wrong. She was also still very much alive. She couldn’t go see her parents now, not like this. No, she had to go see the one dragon who could explain how this happened.
She wracked her brain trying to think of everything she’d learned about the prophecy. She loved history and so she studied a lot, but this baffled her. Nothing in the prophecy said anything about a girl. She’d spent hours listening to Everett’s boring details about the prophecy, yet he hadn’t mentioned that females could become kings. He was so in for it.

Chapter 2
Skye changed direction and instead of heading south for the warm waters of the gulf, she flew northwest. Her mind tried to make sense of what just happened. Her anger for Everett had turned into fear of what was to come. Everett would have the answers. But she might not like the answers he gave.
She certainly didn’t like the consequences of his last answer. To never love again. That was the cost of removing the seal to Sid. She gladly gave it up. But now. Now something was missing and she ached to love again.
After an hour she flew over Yellowstone and marveled at the fact that she wasn’t dead. That meant Sid and Aspen were still alive as well. Perhaps Aspen had become queen. Skye hoped so. She liked her. Plus, if the prophecy was fulfilled, Sid would be the right leader for the job.
She flew over Sid’s house and faltered for a second. Rowan was asleep in there. Sweet Rowan. He’d become her best friend. Her heart tightened at the thought of never seeing him again. It was strange how the ache she often felt disappeared when she was around him. He made her feel human.
She didn’t know what would happen when she found Everett. But if she was a king and the prophecy was being fulfilled, she’d be too caught up in the dragon wars to even think about her human friends. She supposed it couldn’t hurt to stop and say goodbye. She owed him that. After all, he’d been there for her when no one else had been.
She dove for the house before she talked herself out of it. She wanted to feel human again, if only for a minute.

INVADED Release Week Blast & Giveaway

I am so thrilled to help Melissa Landers with her release week launch party for INVADED! See a note from Melissa below and make sure to enter the giveaway!

Hey, fiction lovers. I’m Melissa Landers, author of the Alienated series (YA sci-fi from Disney-Hyperion), and today I’m bouncing with excitement because THE SEQUEL IS FINALLY HERE!

It’s been a year since we left Aelyx and Cara onboard the intergalactic transport, and INVADED begins with an emotional goodbye as they part ways—Aelyx returning to Earth to salvage the alliance, and
Cara continuing to L’eihr to serve out her part of the student exchange. While they’re apart, our star-crossed lovers will face assassination attempts, betrayal, crippling self-doubt, and a sadistic alien Phys Ed class. (Because there’s no escaping PE, even in another galaxy.) When Aelyx and Cara finally reunite…well,
let’s just say it’s combustive. ;-)

What do reviewers think? I’m glad you asked!

“Readers will love the seamless blend of suspense, humor, and romance set against an interstellar landscape. Dual narratives and a tightly plotted mystery keep the suspense running high, and the chemistry between Aelyx and Cara molders.” –Booklist

“Excellent character development and integration between modern reality and science fiction. Teens will be rooting for the galactic couple while enjoying the action and suspense that runs through the two volumes.” –School Library Journal

“The protagonists' forced separation gives greater depth to their romance. Each learns to turn a critical eye upon the flaws of their native societies while confronting genuine obstacles to a future together. These complications only
underscore the growing sense of menace that propels the narrative to an action-packed climax.” –Kirkus

I hope you’ll make tracks to the nearest bookstore and pick up a copy of INVADED! If
you’re snowed in, here are some easy links to bring the sequel right to you:

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | iBooks | Book Depository (free worldwide shipping) | Indie Bound | Indigo | Books-A-Million

Bio: Melissa Landers is a former teacher who left the classroom to pursue other worlds. A proud sci-fi geek, she isn’t afraid to wear her Princess Leia costume in public—just ask her husband and three kids. She lives outside Cincinnati in the small town of Loveland, “Sweetheart of Ohio.” For more information, or just to say hello, visit www.melissa-landers.com.

To celebrate my book birthday, I’m offering one lucky winner a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble and an autographed swag pack, complete with mini posters of BOTH books! This giveaway is open internationally, and due to sweepstakes laws, entrants must be 18 years or older to participate.

Best of luck, and happy reading!

2012 Book of the Year Award Finalist-Young Adult Fiction, ForeWord Reviews

"Sure to win over YA readers looking for a dangerous, dystopian adventure story" —Kirkus Reviews

"Gripping young adult dystopian novel; compelling conflicts; high stakes; powerful narrative; surprises keep coming; strong writing; page-turner; engaging characters; Readers will be hungry for the sequels.”—BlueInk Review (starred review)

"Thomason's description of Thera's totalitarianism will make fans of Brave New World shiver... SCI, her fantasy corporation, has disturbing parallels to actual companies and regimes that claim to do good while harming people... The author deftly appeals to both romance-loving teens as well as those intrigued by young adults fighting the establishment.”—ForeWord Clarion Review, 4 stars

“I’m angry at all of them. Every SCI leader. In fact Joshua gave me a list of those who are Earth-side. It makes for a great to-do list.” They all deserve to pay.
I’m done talking. It’s time for some action.
One thousand one.
One thousand two.
One thousand three.
That’s all it takes to even out my breathing and steady my hand.
I shift the crosshairs on my target ever so slightly—from his heart to his hand—and pull the trigger.
My father would be proud that all his training paid off. Oh, who am I kidding? He’d find something to criticize about my work here. Sad that even though he’s gone I can hear him saying, “If you’d hit a little to the left you’d have taken out a higher concentration of nerves.”

Top 10 Fun Facts About SOUL TAKEN

1. The inciting incident came about while I was walking into my local CVS about four years ago. And it took those long four years to get it where it is today.

2. Two of the characters are named after dogs that I've had. One is still alive and she is thrilled to be a part of my story.

3. I based the high school after the one I spent four years of my life in. But it had been rebuilt several
years ago, now it only lives on in my memory and in the book.

4. Maggie and I share an affinity for cemeteries.

5. It wasn't pitched as a series, but now I get to linger in this world for two more books.

6. I have a crush on two of my male characters, for very different reasons. (And I hope you will too!)

7. Two of the characters (who will have a much bigger role in Books 2 & 3) were never in the original drafts, they came out of left field and I'm so glad they decided to stay.

8. Gate Seven came from much thought about how I would want my after life paradise to look like.

9. One of my family members plays a small role in the novel. I was a bit nervous to select that scene
since it nearly made me cry while writing it, but my editor loved it so much it had to stay.

10. It has an amazing cover!

I knelt down again next to Ally and reached out to touch her skin. Even though the sensation was unpleasant, I could feel her pulse as it rapidly declined.
“No,” I moaned. I looked up again to see if any of the Guard could help, but no one was around.

I looked back down at Ally. Her face was paling by the second. My soul started to tingle. I leaned  closer to her body, reaching my hand out to touch her face again, when her arm moved toward mine.

I jumped back.
Heather pushed through the crowd. “Did she just move? Did I see her move?” Streaks of black
mascara ran down her cheeks.

A ringing sensation tickled my ear and I tuned in to the True Soul’s presence. I looked at each human.

The True Soul was close, but who had it? They all seemed equally shocked at the tragedy.

An uncomfortable pressure in my chest drew me closer to her body. My soul slanted toward hers
until I was practically on top of her. I helplessly watched my hand morph and stretch toward her body.

“What the—?” I tried to pull back but the strength of whatever was happening had other ideas.
My hand disappeared first, then my arm, then my torso. But before I could call for help, my world went dark.

Interview with the Author:

What inspired you to write Hell's Hollow?

It was really the name of the town that inspired me. For years, my family and I have
gone up to the Sierra Foothills and there's a big street sign in a rural area, much
bigger than most street signs, that says Hell's Hollow. Every time we would pass that
sign, I would think, Someday I'm going to write a book about a town called Hell's
Hollow. I didn't know what it would be about until I started writing it. I started with
the name of the town and then with the protagonist and just let them lead me into
the story.

What is your writing process like?

I need quiet to really be able to get to the sweet spot where the writing flows. So I
don't listen to music and I prefer not to be at a noisy café. My best writing comes
when I let the character tell me the story. With Hell's Hollow I was surprised by
many elements of the storyline, none of which would have happened if I'd really
tried to guess at what would come next. So listening for the voice of the characters
and the voice of the story are key for me.

What were your favorite elements of Hell's Hollow to write?

I really enjoyed writing the growing relationship between Seraphina and Zach. I
loved the build up from strangers to friends to something more. And because she
isn't sure if he's real or a figment of her potential loss of sanity, there's an element of
mystery that was fun to play with.

Also, the crazy parts! I loved writing her psychotic grandmother and also the scenes
where Seraphina's own sanity begins to waver. I actually did quite a bit of research
on different types of psychosis and based much of her aunt and grandmother's
behavior on videos I watched of schizophrenic patients.

Were there parts of the story you didn't enjoy writing?

I always struggle a bit with writing the parts when everything is going wrong. I'm
impatient to get to the places where things are working out. So I really have to push
myself to hold out and let things be bad for a while. It makes the payoff of the happy
parts so much richer.

Did you do much research for Hell's Hollow?

I did! I actually really enjoyed my research for this book. First, I spent time in the
area of the Sierra Nevada foothills where the story takes place and even went to
Big Trees State Park to get a feel for the giant trees that live in the Hollow. I spent
quite a bit of time online researching psychosis and schizophrenia. I also did a lot of
research on the history of the area — both of the Native American tribes that lived
there and on the Gold Rush history. Other areas of research included the serpent-
handling religion of West Virginia, alternative forms of healing, mythology about
Hell, diseases caused by wild animals, baking and a few others I won't mention so as
not to give anything away.

In Hell's Hollow, Seraphina has the ability to heal. Her grandmother hears
people's thoughts. And her aunt sees the future. If you could have any super
power, what would it be?

Ooh. That is a tough question! I have secretly always wanted Seraphina's power.
But there are others that would be super cool too. I'd say flying, but I'd probably get
motion sickness :)

Why does Seraphina, who has always obeyed her mom's rule about not using
her special ability, decide to start trying?

Partly, it's because the tugs from the Hollow have begun to keep her awake at night
and bother her all day. And partly, it's because of Zach. She wants to help him.
There's also one more piece, which is that she's sixteen and her mom's rule feels
wrong to her, and she's getting brave enough to make up her own mind.

Kaila Guidry has always known she is different. When she meets Jordyn Stryker at school, she finds out
just how different.

Jordyn was born and raised far from Earth, a starseed, one of six new students sent to Louisiana's Bush
High to learn human ways. But Jordyn didn't count on meeting someone like Kaila.

When Kaila is pushed to her limit by high school bullying and cruelty, Jordyn awakens her to a new
reality—and to love. But to prove herself, Kaila must look the other way as the real purposes of the
starseeds unfold.

As the horrific plan behind the starseed visit to Earth moves inexorably forward, Kaila and Jordan,
caught in an impossible love, must determine where their true loyalties lie.

Praise

"You know from the opening paragraph that something very strange is going on… We see Kaila try to live
the life of a normal teen, and we see her "otherness" pull her back into an increasingly tangled web of
questions, deceit, and hidden intentions. Liz really shines as a writer, lining the closets and drawers of
everyday life with spine-chilling suspense that springs out at you when you least expect it. Starseed is an
entertaining read. I highly recommend."

--Patricia B. Smith. Author “What the Animals Tell Me” and “Fifty Shades of Santa” (clean romance
fiction)

"Liz Gruder’s characters come alive through youthful, spunky narrative, and her headstrong heroine,
Kaila Guidry, elicits a reader’s encouragement from the first page. Fans of Amanda Hocking will find
themselves similarly transported into Gruder’s exploration of the dark sides of faith, love, higher
dimensions, and, of course, high school." --Jadie Jones, young-adult fantasy author

Author Liz Gruder

As a youth, Liz Gruder saw a series of UFOs with her best friend while riding bikes. Ever since, she’s held
a fascination for the stars. An avid reader, she used to hide under her covers and read with a flashlight.
She has degrees in English and Psychology from Tulane University, a nursing license and a yoga
certification. After going through Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Liz realized how short life is and is
now slowly fulfilling her bucket list: she’s been to the Egyptian pyramids (totally awesome and thought
provoking) and is now teaching yoga and writing speculative fiction. Starseed is her debut novel.
